The short answer

On an exposed Hastings plot, specification is everything: solid brass or 316 marine-grade stainless, IP67 or better, and sealed connections. Standard powder-coated aluminium fittings look identical on day one and are pitted, weeping and failing within a few winters.

What salt air actually does

Salt-laden air deposits a fine conductive film on every surface, and it does not need a storm to do it — an ordinary onshore breeze carries it several hundred metres inland. That film draws moisture, accelerates galvanic corrosion where two different metals meet, and creeps into any seal that is not perfect. On plots above the Old Town, along the seafront at St Leonards, and out towards Bexhill and Fairlight, this is the defining design constraint.

Exposure zones vary street by street

  • Front line and clifftop. Full marine specification, no compromise. Brass or 316 throughout, everything sealed.
  • Within a few hundred metres of the sea. Brass or 316 on exposed elevations; sheltered rear gardens can occasionally step down.
  • Valley gardens and the sheltered side of a ridge. Noticeably kinder; good quality standard fittings can be reasonable.
  • Inland towards Battle and the Rye lanes. Standard specification is usually fine with sensible IP ratings.

Wind matters too

Coastal gardens take sustained wind, not just gusts. That means anything freestanding needs proper fixing, spike fittings need to be driven into firm ground with slack in the cable tail, and cable clipped to fences must be tight enough not to chafe through over a winter of movement. Wind-shaped trees also grow asymmetrically, which changes where an uplight should sit — worth planning around rather than correcting later.

The connections fail before the fittings

Even with brass fittings, a scheme with cheap push-fit connectors will fail in coastal conditions. Every joint should be gel-filled or resin-sealed, positioned above standing water level, and recorded so it can be found again without excavating a border.

Getting this right at the start is not about buying the most expensive fittings — it is about spending the money on materials and joints rather than on replacing a whole scheme in five years' time.

Good questions

Coastal lighting FAQs

What garden lighting is best for coastal properties?

Solid brass or 316 marine-grade stainless steel fittings, fully sealed to at least IP67, with gel-filled or resin-sealed connections and a transformer housed away from the prevailing weather. Powder-coated aluminium fails quickly in salt air regardless of the finish quality.

Why do garden lights fail near the sea?

Salt-laden air is both conductive and corrosive. It pits aluminium, attacks dissimilar metal joints, works into any imperfect seal and corrodes connections. Most coastal failures are at the joint or the housing, not the LED.

How much more does coastal-grade lighting cost?

Expect roughly 30 to 60 percent more per fitting for solid brass or 316 stainless over a standard specification. Against the cost of replacing a full scheme after four or five years, it is the cheaper option by a wide margin.
